Wedding Photography celebrating the Independence of the Adventurous, Cosmopolitan Bride serving New York, Connecticut and the Hamptons - based in Rye, NY
My phone buzzed with the usual text message alert… but as I glanced at the screen I noticed a very unusual picture staring back at me… Haley’s boyfriend Tom sent me an iPhone photo of a diamond ring… one that he was planning to purchase for Haley!! I was thrilled and giddy with excitement all at the same time. Only this picture had to be deleted immediately and kept confidential for several more weeks. How on earth would I keep this secret?!? I managed to keep my lips sealed until he messaged again that the ring was in hand and he was ready to start planning the proposal.
I didn’t really know what kind of timeframe Tom was debating but I assumed he would pop the question sometime this summer. But when he said, “Yeah, so I’m thinking like… maybe in the next week or so” … my mind went into overdrive! See, Tom and Haley have been together for almost six years now… they met during the fall semester of their freshman year at Notre Dame and have been together ever since. He had already been dating Haley for a year when Dave and I met… he was there for our engagement and Stacy and Mike’s too.. so we all knew this moment would happen eventually, I just didn’t expect it to happen so all of a sudden! To say that I was beyond excited is an understatement!!
We decided to fool her into thinking she and I were photographing a Sunday morning engagement session at the Brooklyn Bridge… I even renamed Tom to “Stefanie” in my phone just to be sure she didn’t see anything. He scouted the location last weekend and the the plan was set! When she and I arrived I told her to head out to the end of the railing by the water so I could “take a test shot” while we waited for the couple to arrive. I prayed I had set her up in the right spot when I heard Tom from behind me… “tell her to look out at the water”… so I told her… “Can you turn your head… I need to see how the sun is hitting your hair.” She was sort of confused but obliged… and before I knew it Tom was walking over to surprise her and the rest is history! I’m so glad I was there to grab a few shots during the proposal in this famous New York City spot. The perks of getting up early… the city is still sleeping and it feels like you have it all to yourself!
Haley was surprised and excited and in shock as well! It was the perfect way to end a busy weekend. I love that I got to be there to capture this once in a lifetime moment for them and I cannot wait to start planning the wedding! Woohoo!
Congrats you guys!! We love you!!
After the proposal, we ate a big family brunch at Balthazar in Soho to celebrate before they spent the rest of the afternoon soaking it all in!
And seriously Tom, thank you so much for letting me be a part of your big moment… I was so honored to be there with you guys!!
