From the Runway
Spring 2016 Bridal Fashion Trends

If you’ve seen my Instagram account over the last two weeks, you know I spent a full week photographing Spring 2017 Bridal Fashion Week in New York City with Aroos Joon, the leading multilingual wedding media site in the middle east. I joined the Aroos Joon team to capture all of the Bridal Market shows, presentations and especially, the new trends in wedding gowns for a jam packed seven days of bridal madness! I’ll be featuring plenty of recaps from my favorite shows over the next few weeks here on my blog but I decided to kick it off with my assessment of the hottest trends in bridal attire! If you’re anything like me, you’re going to want to plan a series of vow renewals just to have a chance to step back into a bridal salon! And if you’re still shopping for a dress, there’s no better time to be a bride!! The only problem will be choosing the perfect gown with so many amazing work of art gowns to choose from!!

So what were the hottest trends this season?!? Let’s just say, drama is in… boring is out!

Trend #1: Drama!!

This fire and ice layered illusion dress by Francesca Miranda was a crowd favorite!!

Trend #2: Decadent Floral Applique

This floral adorned ball gown as well as the first image both by Marchesa perfectly paired detail and romance!

Trend #3: Sheer is the new Satin

Every single show I attended featured multiple gowns with a sheer illusion element either in the bodice or even the full head to toe gown… this isn’t your grandmother’s wedding that’s for sure! These two by Mira Zwillinger took that trend to the extreme – luckily these dresses can be fully lined for the more demure bride but the intricate details to create these looks is stunning!

Trend #4: Peplum

Again, nearly every show featured a dress with a peplum skirt. These long sleeve architectural top by Ines de Santo was a favorite of mine!

Trend #5: Texture

Luscious skirts and details appliques gave even the most simple silhouette an elegant touch! The high-low skirts also made their rounds like this classic one from Anne Barge.

Trend #6: Color!

Designers across the board incorporated color into their signature pieces. Naeem Khan’s show was a bold display of colorful details across a variety of gowns! His finale piece was black!!

Trend #7: Delicate Romance

I love the softness of this romantic number by Marchesa!

Trend #8: The Deep V

If last year saw the rise of the dramatic low back… this season marked the return of the Deep V Cut tops for a daring bride like this style from Sottero and Midgley.

Trend #9: Laser Cut

The combination of a short sheer gown and the laser cut details by Mira Zwillinger is definitely a trend setter!!

Trend #10: Long Sleeves

Sleeves are the new sweetheart neck for this season! This illusion piece by Naeem Khan definitely doesn’t feel covered up!

Trend #11: The Cape

Bridal Capes that can be worn for the ceremony and removed for the party made a huge statement on this season’s runways like these gowns by Ines de Santo and Francesca Miranda.

Trend #13: The Floral Corset

The illusion and floral detailed corsets with matching embellished veils like this one by Reem Acra completed any bridal look!

Engagement Sessions
How to Choose a Location

It’s engagement season!! And that means, lots of newly engaged brides are overwhelmed by a seemingly simple decision, where to take their engagement photographs. Deciding where to hold your engagement session can be daunting! It’s enough to make even the most laid back bride stress out.

Luckily there is a key to choosing the right location, and it doesn’t have anything to do with the actual place… it has everything to do with the time of day! With the right light, any spot you decide will be a dream! This is the beauty of engagement sessions… you’re not confined to ceremony times and reception schedules to facilitate your photographs in between… there are no limitations during your engagement shoot… so be creative, get personal and do something you’re going to remember fondly in years to come!

New York City is full of epic locations – The Brooklyn Bridge, Top of the Rock, Bethesda Terrace, etc… but there are hundreds of hidden gems that are equally as idyllic… the Conservancy Garden is one of my favorites!

Don’t overlook your own backyard… engagement sessions at home are some of my favorite!!

A tree-lined street never disappoints… especially Lilly Pond Lane…

Are there historic gardens or historic estates nearby?

And around here… a few minutes strolling on the beach is worth it every time…

Don’t let choosing an engagement session location get the best of you … focus on enjoying this special time with your fiancé! You can’t go wrong!

Simply Gorgeous by Erin
Salon Launch Party

Before heading west for Showit United, I celebrated the launch party of Simply Gorgeous by Erin‘s new salon space in Connecticut. Erin started her business as a solo makeup artist for Connecticut brides. Only a few short years later, she’s grown her team to 10 plus ladies beautifying brides-to-be all over New England and the Tri-State area. Her story is so inspiring and she could not be nicer! I was so thrilled to be invited to the big launch party. Here are some highlights of Erin’s big debut… along with her amazing ‘glam squad’… enjoy!

What’s a party without a cake… Hope Wright from A Little Imagination Cakes did a spectacular job on this one… I love it!

The Benefits of a Friday Wedding
Getting Married on a Weekday

Having a Friday Wedding by Jessica Haley Photography

As a photographer, I LOVE a Friday wedding! It allows me to work on the same schedule as my husband’s job which is always a bonus! Especially when the majority of my wedding calendar falls over the weekends. A Friday event is always welcome! But what if you’re a bride overwhelmed by the process of securing a date and a location – is a Friday wedding worth pursuing?

Here are some of the benefits of celebrating your nuptials before the weekend hits…

  1. Your dream venue might have a lower food and beverage minimum or rental fee on a Friday
  2. The guests who attend are really invested in being there for the two of you.
  3. If you’re traveling to a destination, guests will have more days to spend enjoying the location
  4. You’ll have a wider selection of vendors to choose from since they’re less likely to be booked
  5. Finally, you’ll have an extra day to honeymoon during the following week off of work – everybody wins!

I’m back in New York this morning and off to photograph Laura and Andrew’s Friday wedding today! Can’t wait to celebrate together!
